Next Generation Awards
For the last nineteen years the Accessories Council has partnered with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to host the FIT Next Generation Awards. The design awards competition honors students of the Accessory and Jewelry Design programs who have created outstanding collections based on their school curriculum and helps to foster the talents of the next wave of designers and professionals. At the end of the school year, students show their collections in an exhibition. As a way for the Accessories Council to support their talent, we present the students with the strongest designs in each category with a monetary award. Categories include Fine Jewelry, Fashion Jewelry, Handbags (Evening), Handbags (Day), Millinery, Belts/Small Leather Goods, Footwear, Jewelry Portfolio, Accessory Portfolio (including Cold Weather), Men’s and Optical.
“As the partnership between the Accessories Design Department and the Accessories Council grows, the Council has given these novice designers the opportunity to be critiqued by its membership, compete, and be awarded for their tremendous vision,” said Vasilios Christofilakos, FIT alumnus and former Chairperson of the Accessories Design Department.
The winners are determined by judges from our sponsors and leaders in the fashion, accessory and jewelry industries. Each sponsor company contributes financially, which underwrites a first and second prize for the students. The Accessories Council also provides the winners’ resumes and contact information to the benefactors so they may be hired for future positions. A number of the students have been hired by the brands that have participated in the event.
“We are proud to support Fashion Institute of Technology in their mission to develop talent for the growing accessories industry,” remarked Accessories Council President Karen Giberson.
