LOOK OPTIC: A Decade of Style

Ten years in, Andrew Leary keeps a sharp focus on design-forward reading glasses made with sustainability in mind.

Andrew Leary is clearly a passionate, energetic, and unmistakably confident hands-on leader — a founder who has successfully navigated New York-based LOOK OPTIC through a fast-moving decade of cultural shifts.

The company’s origin story is as remarkable as its founder’s. And it began with a problem: during a business trip, he borrowed a pair of Selima Salaun glasses from his wife. His one set of instructions from her, “Don’t lose the glasses.” His trip was tied to non-profit work with charity: water, an organization founded by Scott Harrison, who happened to notice Leary’s frames and asked to keep them. It was a request Leary could not deny — but in addition to breaking the news to his wife that he had given the glasses away, he soon discovered he had a new problem. He could no longer hide the fact that his eyesight had begun to change.

“After months in denial, unable to read the paper or see a menu without the light on my phone, I purchased my first pair of expensive prescription reading glasses,” Leary explained. “For a few days it was exciting — wearing glasses gave me a new look. But quickly I realized it was like owning one pair of shoes and having to wear them every day. That wasn’t an option.”
