Gemological Institute of America: Inside The World of Gemstones

There are few names in the jewelry world as respected—or as foundational—as the Gemological Institute of America. Established in 1931, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones, and pearls. A public benefit, nonprofit institute, GIA serves as the leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems and jewelry, guided by a mission to Educate, Research, and Protect.

In the 1940s, GIA established the renowned “4Cs” and the International Diamond Grading System™—still the worldwide standard for evaluating diamond quality today. Simply put, GIA helped define the language and standards by which gemstones are understood and valued across the globe.

In January, Accessories Council members were granted a rare and remarkable behind-the-scenes tour of GIA’s New York City facilities, offering an intimate look at the precision, science, and artistry that define gemstone grading.
