How Music, Theater, Movement — And Modeling — Are Bringing Creative Energy to a Life Devoted to the Arts

Anedra Shockley-Elsesser possesses an undeniable magnetism. In our latest jewelry story — where brooches take center stage as bold, expressive statements — she wears each piece not merely as adornment, but as a reflection of a life richly lived. While in Paris, she performed and was mentored by jazz greats including the late Abbey Lincoln, Archie Shepp, and the late pianist and composer Bobby Few. She also lent her voice to Daughters of the Dust and can be seen and heard in the climactic scene of the original 1985 film “The Color Purple.”

Born and raised in Los Angeles and educated at Wellesley College, where she studied philosophy and literature, Shockley-Elsesser’s path has never followed a straight line. While still in school, she immersed herself in interpretive dance — African, modern, and classical forms — before moving off campus to pursue performance more fully. Music, theater, and movement became her language. She joined a band, Sundance, sang, danced, and created freely in an early declaration of a life devoted to the arts.
