American Couture
The new American Couture is a bold and outrageous aesthetic where the boundaries between luxury and everyday wear dissolve. On these pages two of the most prestigious fashion organizations in America--The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and the Accessories Council - collaborate on the art of dressing without limits, offering a dynamic modern vision for a world in constant evolution.
Here, elevated materials and impeccable craftsmanship blend seamlessly with the energy of streetwear — sneakers, hoodies, joggers, and hosiery are reimagined in a fusion of style that celebrates individuality, cultural diversity, and a fresh perspective.
Under the direction and creative eye of Sarah and Gary Wolkowitz, the husband and wife team who revolutionized modern hosiery with their iconic brand Hot Sox, this story comes together in a way that brings the couple’s unique sense of style full circle and celebrates the intersection of art, design, and fashion. Their leadership anchors this effort, which unites members of the Ac with young American designers from the CFDA. This unique collaboration between high end fashion and accessories, including eyewear, footwear, hosiery, gloves, bags, jewelry, hats, and scarfs, results in a bold and timely statement.
Founded over 40 years ago, Hot Sox emerged when socks were purely functional, devoid of creativity or style. As chief creative officer, Gary transformed hosiery into a fashion statement, drawing inspiration from pop art icons like Warhol to introduce colorful, silkscreened designs. Their bold striped socks became an instant success, and with innovations like toe socks and leg warmers, Hot Sox redefined the global perception of hosiery. The brand’s impact earned a 1982 Coty Award — to date, the only hosiery company to ever receive this honor — and Gary’s 1992 induction into the CFDA further validated the couple’s contributions to fashion.
Hoping to inspire others, Gary and Sarah bring The New American Couture to Ac Magazine in a bold mix and match aesthetic that is reshaping the modern fashion narrative.
